GINSENG MEDICINAL COMPARISONS

One of the most important medicinal components of ginseng is saponin. Korean Ginseng has the richest variety of saponin. Its composition is so exquisite that no other plants in the Panax family come close to it. So far, some thirty different kinds of saponin, named ginsenosides, have been identified. These ginsenosides are further divided into diols, triols and oleananes according to their structural characteristics, and are known to have different medical effects. The number of ginsenosides in American ginseng is higher than Korean ginseng, but their composition produces very limited medicinal effects when compared to Korean ginseng.
Unique to white ginseng are saponins of malonyl-ginsenosides, e.g. MG-Rb1, MG-Rb2, MG-Rc and MG-Rd. Red ginseng specifically contains such saponins as G-Rh2, G-Rs1, G-Rs2 and H-R4.

The content of thermostable protein in Korean ginseng (the protein that survives destruction at boiling), which is known to be a substance that effectively resists radioactive ray (e.g. X-rays and gamma rays) disorders, is greater than that contained in either American or Sanchi ginseng. The amino acid derivatives (Arg-Fru-Glc) possessing vasodilative property have not been found in American or Sanchi ginseng.

Korean ginseng characteristically shows comparatively uniform distribution of various ginsenosides. With regard to the composition of major ginsenosides, which have pharmacological effects, American ginseng grown in U.S.A. shows a lopsided distribution with G-Rb1 and G-Re accounting for 75% of the entire ginsenosides, while Korean Ginseng shows considerably uniform distribution with G-Rb1, G-Rg1, G-Re, G-Rc and G-Rb2 respectively accounting for 23%, 19%, 15%, 12%, and 11%.

Korean ginseng contains various types of saponins (ginsenosides) that show increased pharmacological activities. Korean red ginseng contains additional substances that promote micro-physiological activities which are not found in American or Sanchi ginseng.

Non-Saponin Components: Total saponin content of Korean ginseng is standardized at a maximum attainable value of 4%. American ginseng has twice the number of ginsenosides but the additional ginsenosides have no recognizeable value. As a result, American ginseng is standardized at a maximum attainable value of 8%.

Certain non-saponin components also set Korean ginseng apart. Korean ginseng contains a much more acidic polysaccharides. Acidic polysaccharides are known to prevent obesity or hyperlipemia by enhancing immunity against cancer, inhibiting lipolysis and lowering intestinal absorption of cholesterol or fat.
